This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Learn more. Major Duties/Responsibilities: The Staff Psychiatrist is clinically responsible to the Chief Medical Officer of the Mental Health Clinic. He/She promotes quality patient care as a clinical expert in Psychiatry; works as mentor, preceptor, consultant, and researcher; works collaboratively with other health care professionals to accomplish patient, service and hospital goals. The selectee will hold the following clinical competences: Examinations - Uses assessment skills to promptly examine new patients thoroughly using appropriate clinical, laboratory and other pertinent data. Provides follow-up when indicated. Answers Mental Health inpatient consult requests when necessary. Diagnosis - Accurately interprets and evaluates clinical data for the purpose of determining diagnosis and clinical status. Formulates assessment and plan according to accepted protocols, treatment plans or attending physician's treatment protocols, treatment plans or recommendations. Corrects diagnosis when necessary. Therapeutic Ability - Initiates appropriate and timely treatment. Recognizes changes in behavior, symptoms, signs, and other pertinent facts about the patient and has the ability to modify plan of treatment when indicated. Prescribes medications according to outpatient formulary. Recognizes own capabilities and limitations. Provides direct, short-term, crisis intervention, grief work and brief psychotherapy. Counsels patients on smoking, alcohol and/or other substance cessation. Administers or orders appropriate immunizations Effectiveness in Emergencies - Acts quickly in recognizing emergency situations, and takes timely necessary action. Performs BLS. Calls codes when indicated and manages CPR efforts until code team arrives Patient Management - Maintains confidentiality of patients and relatives through competence and interpersonal skills. Acts as a consultant in involving patients in the treatment and management plan. Works collaboratively with other professionals to evaluate, treat, or arrange disposition for veterans with Mental Health issues identified in Acute Care and Primary Care settings. Refers patients to other services of subspecialty clinics such as nutritional counseling as appropriate. Authorizes special transportation as needed for patients' follow-up appointments as indicated. Record keeping - Records data from clinic visit, including chief complaints, active problems, medications, physical findings and results of diagnostic tests. Promptly and completely reports physical examinations and changes in patient status. Maintains clear, accurate, and current clinical records. Completes medical records per hospital regulations.
