This PGY2 pharmacy residency in geriatrics is a new addition to other PGY2 pharmacy residency programs offered at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville Campus. The goal of the program is to develop geriatric pharmacotherapy specialists with strong teaching and leadership skills who provide exceptional patient care services for older adults, contribute to the body of literature in geriatric pharmacotherapy, and teach multiple disciplines about the needs of the aging population. This program is a collaboration between Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville Campus and is led by pharmacists with extensive experience in geriatric pharmacy practice, academics, and leadership. The robust curriculum is longitudinal and includes learning experiences in innovative, interprofessional environments including continuing care retirement communities, a Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, rural clinics, long term care, hospice and palliative care, memory care clinic, osteoporosis clinic, geriatric consult clinic, geropsychiatry, and primary care. Effective teaching is emphasized, and opportunities exist in layered learning practice environments as well as in a geriatrics elective course for student pharmacists. Residents will participate in monthly academic leadership sessions with other PGY2 residents to hone their active learning expertise. Asheville is a premiere travel destination that is nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina and offers fine dining, outdoor activities such as hiking and paddling, and an art and music scene.
