Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Analyst at the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS). This position provides the Research Analyst with opportunities to work in a collegial work environment to support innovative and multidisciplinary studies through conducting and assisting in research using large databases on multiple studies. The Research Analyst maintains competence in processing and managing large databases such as Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial insurance databases, SAS programming skills for large relational databases, communicating clearly with investigators and staffs, and scientific writing for statistical analysis plan and method/results of analyses.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Develops and maintains statistical analysis plans and documentation.
Works with investigators and staff to implement longitudinal statistical programming and data analyses for health services research and outcomes studies evaluating the use and effects of pharmacological and other healthcare treatments, utilizing national and state healthcare databases including national Medicare and Medicaid, nursing home, private insurance, and other datasets reflecting healthcare encounters on very large patient populations (tens of millions of individuals followed over multiple years).
Applies techniques in SAS software for longitudinal data analysis, data linkage across large datasets, construction of medication use calendars, and statistical modeling of outcomes.
Participates in preparation of results for journal publication.
Works collaboratively with the study team and PETS Center staff on analytic aspects of the study, including: drafting statistical analysis plans (SAP) , creating analytic datasets and conducting statistical analyses of data, and communicating the analytic outputs of the study in written and oral format, e.g, drafting tables, figures and the methods and results section of manuscripts.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in a related scientific field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of data analysis, statistical methods, and programming in relevant databases.
A minimum of five years' experience writing statistical programs to process and analyze large, complex datasets, including experience with SAS in relevant datasets of which at least one year of SAS programming experience is required, and a higher level of experience is desirable.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience working with large administrative data sets in a research setting. Applicants with experience working with Medicare and Medicaid databases or other claims databases.
Candidate should have a strong work ethic and problem-solving skills, be a good collaborator, and work well in a fast paced environment.
Candidate will need to be well organized and have good time management skills to conduct analyses efficiently and expeditiously while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required for understanding data and programming requirements, and reporting results to team leadership and colleagues.
Experience working with healthcare claims
Experience with SAS Macro, Proc SQL, R, and experience in analysis of health care claims data
SAS Base/Advanced Programming training/certification
Experience with techniques such as propensity scoring and event history analysis
Knowledge of health care data standards and codes, e.g., ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS, National Drug Codes, and elements of claims data
Experience with or knowledge/skills in healthcare data management/medical informatics
Microsoft Office products.
Software packages such as SAS, SPSS, R, Stata and other specialized software for statistical programming and complex data manipulation.

Those who share an interest and have personal career plans as a postdoc, there is an interest in providing a comparable postdoc experience.
